To ensure mortgage insurance or income protection policies meet your individual circumstances, it is important to ensure you are eligible:
Check the benefits package provided by your employer. You may find that you are entitled to several months of salary in the event of sickness or disability.
Involuntary redundancy only is covered by income protection policies.
Voluntary redundancy is not covered. If you are aware of impending unemployment at the time of taking out the policy, or intend to take voluntary redundancy, then you will not be covered under the terms of the income protection policy.
Self-employed persons can protect their income too but additional restrictions are applied before claims are satisfied. The standard requirement is that the business has totally ceased trading. Unemployment cover will not protect your income during periods of low turnover.
Pre-existing medical conditions declared at inception of the income protection policy will usually be excluded with certain qualifications. Stress or back problems will require special consideration.
(Blue Pebble advisors can source specialist insurance where required).
Long term health plans can also be called ‘Income Protection Insurance’ so please ensure that you are aware of the benefits offered by the policy before purchasing.
